A Farewell to Arms is a 1932 black & white war drama directed by Frank Borzage and staring Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou. It tells writer Ernest Hemingway’s famous story of an American ambulance driver during WWI who falls in love with a nurse who is suddenly transferred by her jealous commanding officer. When the ambulance driver is injured on the battlefield, he is taken to the nurse’s new hospital, where there love is renewed against the backdrop of a horrible and inhumane war. This is a great film with great actors telling a great love story that won Academy Awards for both Best Cinematography and Best Sound Mixing.
